Creating & Managing Channels

Creating channels, assigning tenants to them, and appointing channel administrators are SuperAdmin-only operations. This is deliberate: if a ChannelAdmin could create channels or appoint peers, they could widen their own scope. This page walks through the SuperAdmin workflow for setting up a channel.

Creating a Channel

  1. Navigate to Channels in the sidebar
  2. Click the Add Channel button
  3. Fill in the fields:
FieldRequiredDescription
NameYesA descriptive name for the partner or reseller (e.g., "Acme Reseller")
SlugNoA short identifier for the channel
DescriptionNoOptional notes about this channel
Contact EmailNoPrimary contact for the channel partner
  1. Click Save to create the channel

The channel is created Active and ready to have tenants and administrators assigned.

Assigning Tenants to a Channel

A tenant's channel is chosen when the tenant is created:

  1. Navigate to Tenants and click Create Tenant
  2. In the tenant form, choose the Channel the tenant should belong to
    • Select a specific channel to place the tenant under a partner
    • Select Direct (no channel) to keep the tenant SuperAdmin-only

Once a tenant is assigned to a channel, that channel's administrators can manage it.

note

A ChannelAdmin creating a tenant does not see the "Direct" option — the tenant is automatically placed in their channel (they are prompted to choose if they administer more than one). Only a SuperAdmin can create a direct tenant.

Moving a Tenant Between Channels

A tenant's channel is not permanent. A SuperAdmin can move a tenant to a different channel, assign a channel to an existing direct tenant, or take a tenant out of its channel entirely:

  1. Navigate to Tenants and click the edit action on the tenant
  2. Change the Channel field
    • Pick another channel to hand the tenant to that partner
    • Pick Direct (no channel) to remove it from every channel and make it SuperAdmin-only again
  3. Click Save Changes

The move takes effect immediately. Channel scope is re-resolved on every request rather than read from the login token, so administrators do not need to sign out and back in:

  • Administrators of the new channel can manage the tenant straight away
  • Administrators of the old channel lose access straight away — the tenant disappears from their tenant selector and their channel's tenant list, and any further request they make against it is refused
This is an access-control change, not a label

Moving a tenant transfers who can administer it — its edges, connectors, devices, and users all move with it. Nothing inside the tenant is altered, but a different set of people can now reach all of it. Check that the receiving channel's administrators are the ones who should have that access before saving.

SuperAdmin only

A ChannelAdmin never sees the Channel field on the edit form, and the API refuses the change if one is attempted. If a ChannelAdmin could move a tenant, they could push one out of their own scope or pull someone else's in — either way rewriting the boundary they are meant to be confined by.

A tenant can only be moved into a channel that still exists. Naming a channel that has been deleted, or an id that was never a channel, is rejected rather than leaving the tenant in a channel no administrator can reach.

Appointing Channel Administrators

A ChannelAdmin is a user of type ChannelAdmin who has been assigned to one or more channels. There are two steps, both SuperAdmin-only.

Invite a ChannelAdmin

  1. Navigate to Users and open the Channel Admins view
  2. Click Invite and enter the administrator's email address
  3. Select the Channel to assign them to (required)
  4. Send the invitation

The invited user receives an email with a link to the /accept-invite page, where they set their name and password. A ChannelAdmin joins no tenant — any tenant on the invite is ignored — and lands on the Channels page after signing in.

Assign an existing ChannelAdmin to a channel

To give an existing ChannelAdmin access to an additional channel:

  1. Open the channel's detail page
  2. Go to the Administrators tab
  3. Click Assign Admin and select an existing ChannelAdmin user
note

The Assign Admin picker only lists users who are already ChannelAdmins. There is no way to create a new ChannelAdmin from this screen — the user provisioning flow will not create one directly. Invite the ChannelAdmin first (above), then assign them to further channels here.

Suspending or Deleting a Channel

From the Channels page, a SuperAdmin can edit a channel's status (Active/Suspended) or delete it. These actions are not available to ChannelAdmins.

What Happens Next

With a channel created, tenants assigned, and a ChannelAdmin appointed, the channel administrator can:

  • Sign in and see the Channels page listing their channel(s)
  • Open a channel and manage its tenants
  • Select a tenant to administer its edges, connectors, devices, and users
  • Register their channel's tenants with Global VSA

See ChannelAdmin Access for the full scope of what a channel administrator can do.
